family legend | offSTAGE

Yeah, we know. You want all of the juicy details on how young Charlie was abused by his parents, developed a drinking problem at age 7, and wound up in a drug rehab facility at age 9. Sorry, but there ain't none of that kind of stuff here.

Born on December 20, 1927 to middle class parents in Brooklyn, New York, Charlie's childhood was fairly typical with one large exception - he stuttered. In fact, it was Shakespeare that Charlie credits for curing his stutter. Says Charlie, "During the early years, I studied and memorized the Bard's plays, repeating them over and over again until I could recite sections without stuttering."

Family Life
In May of 1952, Charlie Callas met the woman of his dreams. He swept her off her feet at a ball whose band he was playing with at the time. They fell quickly and madly in love and haven't stopped yet! Everyone understood what Charlie saw in Eve Velac. She was smart, beautiful, head over heels in love, and laughed at every joke the soon-to-be comedian made.

But what did she see in him? "I'm still trying to figure that one out," he chuckles.

Together they raised two sons, Larry and Mark, struggled through good times and bad, traveled all over the world and nurtured Charlie's career. It was, the Man is happy to say, "One of the few really smart decisions I've made in my life."
